Event app gamification, without the workarounds

Gamification is now built into every Highbar event app. QR scavenger hunts, rewards for posting or exchanging contacts, bonus games, and a leaderboard you can make public or keep private. No third-party webview, no second login.

Gamification is just one of those features - love it or hate it - it's part of event app lore.

It's easy to see the appeal - there's always anxiety about app engagement, and there really are some cool use cases that drive traffic to booths.

The problem is how hard it is to find great examples that are truly integrated into the app experience. Examples. that give event planners the freedom to design an experience that's fun, easy, and memorable.

Recently a few customers mentioned the lengths they go to to integrate gamification features through 3rd parties via webviews and various other workarounds. A separate tool, loaded inside the app, with its own login and its own dashboard. It works until it doesn't, and onsite is exactly where it doesn't.

Honestly, we weren't planning on building gamification right now. It's not a feature that screams innovation, but when done right, it can really move the needle.

So we decided to go for it. All the building blocks were already there.

A beautiful leaderboard with game rules and prizes that you control.

What we launched

  • A simple, single-screen setup process that's fully integrated into the Highbar.ai app.
  • Configure a QR-based scavenger hunt game to scan sponsors, exhibitors, or sessions.
  • Add rewards for actions like posting to the activity stream or exchanging contacts.
  • Attendees can even earn points for getting scanned as a lead.
  • Design bonus games that reward combinations of different actions (e.g. visit 5 sponsors and share 2 photos).
  • Show a customizable leaderboard (top 3, 5, 10) or keep the results private.
Create rewards for exchanging contracts, scanning sponsors, visiting booths or sessions. Almost any action can be included in your game.

You can even configure QR code designs and insert sponsor logos. Little touches that make it seamless and fun.

Because it's part of the app rather than bolted onto it, there's no second login to explain to attendees, and no separate dashboard to reconcile against your registration data after the event.

It's also included in our pricing. No add-on, no upsell. Flip a switch and it's on.

Creating a custom game experience is as easy as flipping a few switches. The live apppreview shows you exactly what you'll get.

Simplicity first

I won't do a whole spiel here about some of the deeper data opportunities connected to gamification, but they're certainly there.

The key is simplicity. Without it, there's no engagement, no data, and it all feels like a gimmick.

Create custom bonuses that combine different actions and incentives. Make it fun with emoji and custom rules.
